Tips from Cantor's Driving School Instructor and Police Officer - What to do if stopped by the Police
April 14, 2011Cantor's Driving School has many driving instructors that are off-duty or retired police officers. They provided the following tips on what do if you are stopped by the police - great advice for teens, new drivers, and experienced drivers.
- Activate your right turn signal and pull to the right side of the road as quickly and safely as possible. Shift the vehicle into Park.
- If the stop occurs at night, turn on the vehicle's interior light as soon as you stop the vehicle.
- Place your hands on the steering wheel, in view of the officer, as he approaches your vehicle. Make sure your passengers limit their movements and keep their hands in view.
- Lower your window and keep your doors closed as the officer approaches. Stay inside your vehicle unless the officer asks you to exit the car.
- Keep your seat belt fastened as the officer approaches.
- Wait until the officer asks you to retrieve your driver's license, vehicle registration and insurance card before making any movements to do so. Do not hand the officer your wallet, only the items requested.
- Always be polite and courteous. The officer will tell why you were pulled over and let you know if you're going to receive a warning or a citation. If you disagree with the citation do not argue with the officer at the scene. You will have an opportunity to contest the ticket in district court.
- At the conclusion of the vehicle stop, re-enter traffic as safely as possible and continue on your way.
